Understanding Anxiety Counselling: A Brief Overview
Anxiety counselling is a type of therapy that is designed to help people cope with their feelings of worry, fear, and panic. It is a form of talk therapy that involves working with a licensed therapist to explore the underlying causes of anxiety and develop strategies for managing it.
Techniques Used in Anxiety Counselling: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Relaxation Techniques
During anxiety counselling sessions, the therapist may use a variety of techniques to help the client better understand their anxiety and how it affects their life. This may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on identifying negative thought patterns and replacing them with more positive, realistic ones. The therapist may also teach relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation to help the client manage their physical symptoms of anxiety.

Emotional health
Stress
Stress is the modern-day effect of an evolutionary mechanism known as ‘fight or flight’, designed to save our distant ancestors from dangers in the wild. For instance, when under physiological stress, our muscles may tense, blood pressure soar, the heart race and the chest hurt, as breathing becomes shallow and quick; saliva may dry up and we might sweat and shake. When these bodily changes took place for our ancestors, it was because they faced a major threat, such as a wild boar attack, and they needed to gear up to run for it or to fight for their lives. Once they had taken action, and survived, all the physiological arousal would quickly subside.
But in modern times, it is rarely a wild boar that makes us feel threatened. More often, it may be an over-demanding boss or not having enough control over our work (stress is now the most common cause of long-term sickness absence) or the demands of taking a sick relative to regular hospital appointments while trying to hold down a full-time job. The stress doesn’t end and so the physiological effects don’t ebb. That’s why we get physical symptoms from severe stress, such as disturbed sleep and ailments such as frequent migraines, backache, angina, skin eruptions, bowel problems, stomach cramps or high blood pressure

Anxiety
Anxiety is a gift from nature because it aids survival — none of us would live long if anxiety didn’t stop us from taking foolhardy risks! But, like anything else done to excess, too much anxiety can be problematic and become as disabling as any chronic physical illness.
Excessive fears and worry, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive behaviours and post-traumatic stress reactions are all forms of out-of-control anxiety. If you suffer from one of these conditions, or if your days are blighted by continual low-grade anxiety, you may feel that your life will never be normal, as if something alien is in control of you.
There are three elements to anxiety
* the physical sensations you experience
* the emotions you have while experiencing them
* and the thoughts that go through your mind at the time.
However overwhelming high anxiety can feel, it is not something all-powerful and inexplicable. It can be managed very easily, when you know how.
Trauma & Panic
Panic attacks and post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
Brain and Heart Coaching uses The Rewind Technique for the safe, effective treatment of PTSD, panic attacks and some forms of anxiety. It is the same method of treatment as this charity uses with military veterans (https://ptsdresolution.org). Ann Marie has been using it in her work to treat panic attacks and PTSD since 2002.

OnlineCouples Counselling
I offer caring, confidential & effective help and support based on the research evidence of what really helps.

My Story
At a turning point in my own relationship, many years ago, I rediscovered the work of
Psychologist John Gottman & applied his research findings to my own relationship with great
success. This eventually led to my current work with couples and individuals having difficulties in
relationships, based on combining Gottman’s research with my training in the human givens
approach and have found that by doing this I am having great success in helping people turn
failing relationships around.
I have also written a book about this, 5 Steps to lasting Love: an evidence-based guide to
protecting & repairing your relationship, available here.
